Abstract

McDaniel examines Henri Rousseau's works. Rousseau, an ex-toll collector and an unschooled Sunday painter, paint canvasses that drew recognition from Picasso, enter permanent collections of major museums and illustrated in standard surveys of art history. The analysis centers on tackling the enduring enigma of Rousseau by probing the composition of several of his greatest paintings.
