This paper focuses on the research and implementation of design project management. For architectural design institutes, it is imperative to import modern project management manners, and to build a flexible, efficient and prompt managerial system. It is also exigent to use information technology to control design projects. Based on extensive survey, symposium discussions and practices in design institutes, this paper analyzes the characters of the design project management, the design process, ISO quality control and the control of drawings and documents. The design project management mechanisms based on internet technology and modern theories of enterprise management is established. And the Design Institute Project Management System (DIPM) is developed. This system implements the integrate control of design projects, process information, drawings and documents. Managers benefit from this system in their supervisory work, also common designers can query and search for drawings and information faster. Thus DIPM can efficiently improve the work efficiency of design institutes. In this paper, the multi-tier B/S structure of DIPM established by ASP.NET technology is introduced. And key techniques in system development, ISO quality control over design project and realization of software are also described. The responsibility system of project manager leading by the principal of institute is promoted for design project management. Based on this theory and coupled with other technologies, such as object-oriented analysis and design methods, ASP.NET, ADO.NET, databases, DIPM is developed. Also, some key techniques for the system design and implementation, such as web-based system architecture, optimization of database access, Façade pattern and dynamic web charts visualized by ComponentOne components are presented as well. The functions, characters and working environments of DIPM are introduced. By using a practical project example, application conditions of the system and processes are demonstrated. At the end of this paper, further evolution of DIPM is discussed. To sum up, this paper introduces a new information solution for project management of investigation and design industry, by using the technologies of information management system and object-oriented analyze and design methods. This solution is meaningful, for design institutes, to use information technology to reform the traditional mode of production and to improve managing level and work efficiency.
