Once Upon a Time in Anatolia
(15) Nuri Bilge Ceylan
DVD/Blu-ray (157mins)

Nuri Bilge Ceylan's Cannes winner (above) is not a homage to Sergio Leone, but a thoughtful, hypnotic exploration of middle-aged disenchantment. The principal characters - an analytical doctor, a weary police chief and a vain prosecutor - scour the Anatolian countryside for a body, accompanied by a gaggle of podgy cops and the spectral-looking suspect. Very little actually happens, the conversations are often banal, and yet every scene is unforgettable. A remarkable experience.
