Professor Gherardo Gnoli passed away in the late evening of Wednesday, 7 March 2012, at the age of 74, after a long illness. Gherardo Gnoli was one of the most distinguished scholars of preIslamic Iran. From 1965 to 1993 he was Professor of Iranian Studies (later Iranian Philology) at the Istituto Universitario Orientale of Naples, where he served as Rector from 1970 to 1978. From 1993 to 2008 he hold the chair of Religious History of Iran and Central Asia at the University of Rome (La Sapienza).
He was "Socio Corrispondente" of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei and of the Accademia delle Scienze of Turin, Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, "Membre" of the Institut de France, "Membre d'Honneur" of the Société Asiatique, "Associé Étranger" of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles Lettres, and Honorary Fellow of the Ancient India and Iran Trust in Cambridge.
In 1979 he succeded to Giuseppe Tucci and Sabatino Moscati as President of the Istituto Italiano per il Medio ed Estremo Oriente (IsMEO). After the latter merged with the Istituto...
