Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of job interviewee coaching programs via the methodology of meta-analysis. Three meta-analyses were conducted for different criteria for measuring interviewee training program effectiveness. A meta-analysis of 42 effect sizes based on a total sample size of over 2,300 individuals was conducted for the interview performance criterion. Training methods, coaching strategies, and target populations were examined as potential moderators.
Subgroup meta-analyses were employed to (a) compare the effects of behavioral training methods versus non-behavioral training methods used in coaching programs, (b) examine the impacts of coaching strategies designed to remove construct irrelevant variance versus programs that increase true score, and (c) examine the effectiveness of interview coaching for atypical versus typical candidates. Conclusive support for the effectiveness of interview coaching for the population moderator was demonstrated, while mixed results were obtained for other sub-group analyses. Practical and theoretical implications are discussed.
