Care, benefits and training are three popular perks at Sewell Chevrolet-Buick-GMC of Andrews.
Employees get discounts at fitness centers, stock options, profit sharing, tuition reimbursement and 170 hours per employee of training annually.
There is also the We Care Fund that the Sewell company established in 2006. Employees can donate to the fund and the money is given to other employees in need.
"It does create loyalty," says Sherrilyn Mobley, human resources coordinator for the Sewell Family of Dealerships in Odessa, Texas. "If you think I'd think of going somewhere else after the care I got six years ago, I wouldn't."
Six years ago, Mobley's husband, who also works for Sewell, was in a serious motorcycle accident. They both had to take five months off for his recovery.
"If it hadn't been for the people at the dealership at that time and the fund, I don't know where we'd be," Mobley says. "They helped me keep my house payment paid. I had to live in an apartment in Dallas while he went through physical therapy. It helped feed me, pay the apartment rent and keep my bills paid here."
The care fund isn't the only popular perk, Mobley says. The dealership also does many charitable community projects, creating a family feeling among workers.
Sewell's Chevrolet store and its Ford store in Odessa are in demand among job seekers.
Says Mobley: "In this area, we are one of the most sought-after employers. I can't tell you how many applications we get every day."
