Abstract
This study examined the degree to which erotic and wet dreams are modulated by sexual behaviors and the use of pornography in waking life. The sample contained 52 young male adults that were invited to complete a questionnaire concerning their frequencies of sexual fantasy, sexual behaviors, pornography consumption, erotic dreams, and nocturnal emissions. The results suggest that the more often men watch pornography, the more frequently they masturbate to ejaculate and the less likely they are to experience nocturnal emissions. Moreover, people who are sexually active during wakefulness do not seem to dream more about sex. However, the type of pornography use seems to have a significant effect on the erotic content that people dream.
Sexual experiences constitute one of the typical dream themes (Griffith, Miyagi, & Tago, 1958; Nielsen et al., 2003; Schredl, Ciric, Götz, & Wittmann, 2004; Yu, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012). In Zadra's (2007) content analytical study, 45% of men and 41% of women reported at least one sex dream over a period of 2–4 weeks. Sexual intercourse was the most common activity in those dream reports, followed by flirting, kissing, and sexual fantasies. Yu and Fu (2011) adopted the survey and content analytical methods for investigating sex and wet dreams experienced by men. Echoing Zadra's finding, they demonstrated that vaginal intercourse was the most prevalent sex scene, with the estimated average frequency being 8.88 per year for those participants who dreamed about vaginal intercourse at least once a year.
Furthermore, Yu and Fu (2011) observed an interesting phenomenon: Some sexual behaviors that deviate from daytime sexual preferences come into view in dreams, including incestuous activities, homosexual behaviors acted out by heterosexuals, heterosexual acts performed by homosexuals, and sex with nonhuman objects (e.g., aliens, animals, and inanimate objects). Mother was found to be the most frequent object of incestuous feelings in men's sex and wet dreams; female teachers—namely, an authority figure and the potential symbol...
