This book qualifies, updates, extends, and sophisticates Cecil Roth's History of the Jews in England (1941). While Roth glossed over or turned a blind eye to a large body of anti-Semitic images and texts published in Britain, Mr. Felsenstein documents and analyzes an extensive undergrowth of anti- Judaic allusion permeating the rhetoric of eighteenthcentury English popular culture. His choice of dates ( 1 660 to 1 830) is dictated by two events in history: the readmission of the Jews into England under Cromwell and the start of the Parliamentary campaign to grant them political equality and lawful citizenship.
