The visual dictionary of photography David Präkel Lausanne: AVA Academia, 2010. 288 p. ill. ISBN 978294041 1047. $24.95 (paperback)
With photography and other art fields moving into the digital arena, it is easy for practitioners and scholars to become burdened with complex photographic terminology. As recent terms like color spaces and histogram start to replace older terms such as cyanotype and sheet film, an image-based dictionary has become a necessity. This is where The visual dictionary of photography , part of AVA Academia's Visual dictionary series, excels. This small volume (roughly 6.5 inches tall by 5 inches wide) is packed with over 250 entries, each with full definitions and multiple visual examples.
The author, David Präkel, has published several books on photography basics from lighting to creative techniques. His works include Basics photography: composition; Basics photography: exposure; Basics photography: working in black & white; and The fundamentals of creative photography . Präkel is also an educator in the field of photography, and has taught the subject to university students and a variety of other audiences. Clearly this experience has given him a unique perspective on the needs of various readers.
