VANCOUVER'S NEWEST FULL-SERVICE, FULL-SCALE FACILITY
Located in Vancouver on West 7th Ave. in what was once part of iconic recording facility Little Mountain Sound, Fader Mountain Sound Inc. is very much a blend of new and old-school gear, functionality and perhaps most importantly, atmosphere.
Pre Pro
Opened in January 2012 by partners Ben Kaplan, Owner of Fh/fantastic Productions; Garth "GGGarth" Richardson, Owner ol The Farm Studios; and Shawn Cole, Kevin Kowai, Daniel Byrne, and Paul Boechler. Owners of Fader Haster Sound Studios, Fader Mountain represents an effort to creale a space capable of talcing on any sized project - from pre-production through recording, mixing, and mastering - regardless of budget. At the same time, the intentions of the partners was to establish a studio where up-and-coming audio professionals can hone their skills and benefit from the kind of mentoring that was once available in the large-scale recording studios of the past.
In all. the studio consists of six different recording environments spread over roughly 3.000 sq. ft and inhabited by various producers and engineers such as Winston Hauschild and Elisa Pensaeng. and also includes a dedicated mastering facility. CPS Hastering, run by Brock McFarlane.
In today's music and recording industry, for many artists, locking themselves into one studio for months on end simply isn't feasible - nor is it financially responsible for engineers and producers. "With the budgets the way they are these days it's becoming increasingly difficult," says Kaplan. "What we really needed was a home base, a spot where we could do everything rather than doing drums in one space, moving to another location entirely to track other instruments, mix. and so on."
Put blundy, there's strength, flexibility, and added value in numbers. "One of the big things was to keep as much as possible in house." Kaplan continues. "When I was doing the Mother Mother record (2012's The Stidfl. I was mixing in The farm Studios, then tweaking vocals and adding keyboards in my room." The result, he adds, is a very communal environment "Everything's under the same roof, so if we need mastering we un go to Brock's studio upstairs, or, if we need something from someone else, we can walk over and grab it from them."
