Hundreds of protesters marched to the Dominican Republic's National Palace last week to urge president Danilo Medina to halt operations at Xstrata's Falcondo nickel mine.
The demonstrators were objecting to a new open-pit exploration site at Loma Miranda, part of Falcondo, which they say will harm the region's water supply and biodiversity. Xstrata owns 85.3% of the mine.
The project needs the approval of the Dominican environmental ministry.
