L'auteur, en exégète qui a enseigné et traduit des textes bibliques, rouvre le dossier d'une querelle concernant le comma johanneiim, c'est-à-dire la phrase d'une épître johannique où sont nommées les trois personnes de la Trinité. Érasme, constatant son absence dans les meilleurs manuscrits et chez des Pères, l'omit dans son édition du Nouveau Testament grec. Devant la levée de boucliers et le soupçon d'arianisme, il l'inséra à partir de 1521. L'auteur remonte à Valla, pionnier de la critique textuelle, et descend jusqu'au 20e siècle, où l'accord est réalisé contre l'authenticité du comma.

The author, as an exegete who has taught and translated Biblical texts, reopens the question of a dispute concerning the comma johanneum, that is the sentence in the first letter of St. John where the three persons of the Trinity are named. Erasmus, noting its absence in the better manuscripts and in the Fathers, omitted the sentence in his edition of the Greek New Testament. In the face of attacks and the suspicion of Arianism, he inserted it from 1521 on. The author goes back to Valla, pioneer of textual criticism, and comes down to the twentieth century, when an agreement was reached against the authenticity of the Comma.

El autor, como exegeta que enseñó y tradujo textos bíblicos, vuelve a abrir el expediente de una polémica referente al comma johanneum, es decir la frase de una epístola de San Juan en la que están nombradas las tres personas de la Trinidad. Al comprobas su ausencia en los mejores manuscritos y en los Padres, Erasmo hizo caso omiso de esta frase en su edición del Nuevo Testamento griego. Pero, ante la protesta general y la sospecha de arrianismo, la insertó a partir de 1521. El autor remonta a VaJla, precursor de la crítica textual, y desciende hasta el siglo 20, en que el acuerdo resulta realizado contra la autenticidad del Comma.
