Cambridge Companions to Philosophy have been published for some 20 years, and there are now nearly a hundred in the series. For most of these years, the volumes have concentrated on individual philosophers; more recently the publishers have branched out into volumes on major works, like Plato's Republic and Locke's Essay Concerning Human Understanding, and on philosophical movements. This volume on existentialism claims to be the first devoted exclusively to the subject in over 40 years. It follows the standard format of individual chapters on separate topics written by experts in their field. The editor tells us that two principles governed the selection of figures and topics.
