To quote the Cheshire Cat from Alice in Wonderland, "If you don't know where you are going, any road will take you there."
That quote comes to mind in reflecting on Future Forum II, held this past fall at AAMI's headquarters in Arlington, VA. For three days, a group of two dozen healthcare technology management (HTM) professionals brainstormed on how best to chart a path forward. Despite our diverse backgrounds we agreed that the HTM field of the future would be very different from what most of us are used to-just as healthcare itself will be very different.
I joined forces with Jim Keller-who is vice president of Health Technology Evaluation and Safety for the ECRI Institute, as well as the new president of the American College of Clinical Engineering (ACCE)-to lead a break-out session we called "Blue Sky." If we lived in a perfect world with limitless possibilities, what could an HTM professional do?
