Abstract

The past decade has witnessed a resurgence of regionalism in world politics. This article opens up a series of theoretical approaches of perspectives on the study of contemporary regionalism and highlights the close connections that exist between the analysis of contemporary regionalism and the major theoretical debates in the academic study of international relations. The first section considers the perennial problem of defining regionalism, distinguishing between regionalism, regional awareness, regional inter-state cooperation, regional economic integration, and regional cohesion. The second part draws together some of the principal theories that may be deployed to explain the emergence of the new regionalism: first, systemic theories (both neoreaiist and neoliberal); second, theories that emphasize regional interdependences, and third, domestic level theories. The article seeks to provide a framework for understanding and asserting the proliferation of regionalist schemes in contemporary world politics. [PUBLICATION ABSTRACT]
