Louisville metro government is offering 80 learning programs for students during the summer break, Mayor Greg Fischer announced.
The city is releasing a booklet, "Summer Learning Programs: A Guidebook for Children, Young Adults and Their Families," that lists all the programs available. It can be downloaded at the city's website, louisvilleky.gov.
Fischer said Louisville Metro Parks recently hired Ben Johnson as assistant director of recreation and programming to help establish youth programs, focusing on the park community centers.
Fischer also announced that Metro Parks has received a $50,000 grant from the Humana Foundation to promote healthy lifestyles and active living to nearly 500 children participating in city summer camp programs.
The grant will support the Mayor's Healthy Hometown effort to improve physical activity and nutritional habits. Part of the money will also give 90 children the chance to participate in the River City Drum Corp arts-based program during the school year.
