With the start up of its third Midrex module in September last year, Essar Gujarat became the biggest DRI HBI plant in the world. The current plan is to extend the steelmaking and hot rolling of coils, with the first DC arc furnace scheduled for start up in 1994. This is currently the only new large steelmaking project going ahead in India.
The only new big steel plant under construction in India now is the hot rolled coils project in Hazira, in Gujarat state. The HRC plant is a follow-up to the biggest DR/HBI plant in the world (Midrex process based) which the company has put on stream. It is the first gas-based DR plant in India.
Two modules of 440,000t/year each were bought second hand from a unit which closed down in Germany. These were commissioned early in 1990. Essar Gujarat accounted for the major part of DRI supplies in India in the financial year...
