A Critical Companion to Arthur Miller: A Literary Reference to His Life and Work. Susan C.W. Abbotson. NY: Facts on File, 2007.
Review by Stefani Koorey, Valencia Community College.
How many Arthur Miller scholars does it take to screw in a light bulb and turn it on, illuminating the life and works of one of America's preeminent playwrights? One-if that scholar is Susan Abbotson.
Abbotson has crafted an important addition to the ever-expanding library of Miller research with this work, but the academic title belies the fact that the scholarship here is eminently accessible and a great read to boot. This is not some dry resource that will find its only niche in middle and high school libraries-where it will sit, gather dust, and wait patently for that lone student who is assigned a term paper on that "guy" who wrote The Crucible and Death of a Salesman. Abbotson's tome is worthy of inclusion in the most important of Miller reference collections and home libraries-for she has taken some rather dry material (to some, I suppose)...
