EMCIS 2012: developing scalable information systems in turbulent times - part 2
Edited by Professor Zahir Irani
1. Introduction
The efforts undertaken by banks to improve their services through information technology (IT) have resulted in the development of many incompatible information systems (IS). This situation has caused integration problems as disparate IT solutions could not efficiently collaborate. Integration is crucial for e-banking success and banks seek for secure, advanced integrated IT infrastructures to provide competent e-banking services ([59] Shah et al. , 2007). Service-oriented architecture (SOA) is an advanced integration paradigm that may support banks to address their problems. Nevertheless many issues related to SOA adoption in e-banking remain unexplored ([55] Rosen et al. , 2008). Many banks often fail to achieve the benefits from integration efforts in e-banking for various reasons such as the lack of a methodological framework that takes multiple perspectives into account ([57] Schonewille, 2010; [59] Shah et al. , 2007; [5] Baskerville et al. , 2010). For this reason, the limited literature on factors influencing SOA adoption in e-banking and the absence of a methodological framework that explains these factors, form an important research problem that requires further study and deeper investigation. Thus, the aim of this paper is to identify and analyze influential factors of SOA adoption in e-banking. This research is significant as it: adds a new dimension to existing SOA frameworks by investigating influential factors of SOA adoption in e-banking where limited research has been done; and facilitates banks in making robust decisions for SOA adoption, realizing benefits, barriers, risks, costs and changes associated with SOA adoption in e-banking.
In order to identify and analyze influential factors related to SOA adoption in e-banking this paper focusses on key issues like: e-banking and SOA. E-banking services have been adopted and used by the majority of banks and estimates predicting an average adoption rate of 60 percent in the EU by 2020 ([11] Deutsche Bank Research, 2010). Such figures illustrate that e-banking is an interesting fast growing area. The second key issue in this paper is SOA. SOA remains a research area of high importance ([41] Luthria and Rabhi, 2009; [42] Marks, 2008; [13] Eckert et al. , 2009; [36] Lee et al. , 2010). Banks continuously improve...
