NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Jack Mitchell, a renowned photographer who captured images of icons from John Lennon to John Updike during a career than spanned more than four decades, died Thursday morning.

Kathryn Willis, marketing director for the Thrasher-Horne Center for the Arts in Orange Park, where a collection of Mitchell's work is permanently displayed, said Mitchell died about 9 a.m. The New Smyrna Beach resident had been in deteriorating health, she said. He was 88.
Born in Key West in 1925, Mitchell moved to New Smyrna Beach with his family in 1931. Mitchell was drawn to photography as a teenager and his father bought him a Kodak camera for $54.
