ABSTRACT
Objective: The present study was done with an aim to find out the important measurements that will significantly differentiate the sex of femur and its fragments.
Materials and Method: For the study 100 femora, 70 of unknown sex and 30 (15 male, 15 female) of known sex were obtained from the Department of Anatomy of BLDEA'S Shri B.M.Patil Medical College Hospital and Research Centre Bijapur, and 13 parameters were studied.
Result: After obtaining the measurements for each femur, statistical analysis was done using three steps of analysis. It was found that the value of maximum length, vertical diameter and anteroposterior diameter of head were important parameters for sex determination in femur.
Conclusion: Femur obtained as whole is more useful for sex assessment, but if found in fragments, upper end is more determinative of its sex.

INTRODUCTION
Identification of sex of an individual from human skeletal remains is an important step encountered by both forensic experts and archaeologists. Long bones are often found to be important as they often survive inhumation, their accuracy in sex determination amounting to 80%1. It is also important to develop different equations for use where fragmented human remains are pronounced2. Various statistical parameters for multivariate analysis in sexing the bones are suggested3. Sexing among long bones, femur is considered to be the most useful, its length and massiveness being significant4. The factors that makes the femur different in male and female are, the axial skeletal weight of the male is relatively and absolutely larger than that of the female and the most of this weight is borne directly by the femur in transmission of the body weight and obvious modification of the female pelvis with respect to its specialized function in reproduction5. Most of the studies on femur for sex determination have been done on a specified part of the bone, using parameters like diameter of head, length, mid shaft circumference etc with significant findings.
The present study has been planned to identify the important measurements that will significantly differentiate the sex of the femora, and also to aid in sexual identification of fragmented femur remains.
