As Dutch retailer Hema reveals plans to enter the UK market, Retail Week lifts the lid on the value chain.
Hema was founded by Jewish entrepreneurs Arthur Isaac and Leo Meyer in the 1920s after they decided to open a store to cater for people of limited means.
Alfred Goudsmit, director of Amerstam-based department store retailer Bijenkorf got on board and the first Hema store, selling own-brand products from chocolate to clothing from as little as 25 cents a piece, opened on November 4, 1926.
