Elizabeth, the eldest daughter of William and Margaret Roper, married as her second husband Sir Edward Bray of Baynards, Surrey (about 2 miles SE of Cranieigh). A quotation from The Universe of 12 July 1935 gives us the story that became associated with Baynards. According to this, Sir Thomas More's head « had been preserved in spices in a casket locked up in the More charter-chest at Baynards Park, the seat of Sir Edward Bray. The iron-bound coffer still stands, or did so as recently as 1920, in the Great Hall of Baynards ». One variation is that it was an iron chest. The presumption was that Margaret Roper had...
