If one had to declare a single neighborhood as the current development capital of San Diego County, the clear front-runner would be East Village.
Downtown San Diego's largest neighborhood is the place where all kinds of developers either have buildings already rising from the ground or are planning future new apartments, condos, offices, stores and restaurants - totaling hundreds of millions of dollars.
The quest to reach young residents and corporate leaders drawn to the urban vibe - coupled with a brightening construction financing climate and the fact that East Village still has plenty of underutilized space for projects - all combined to raise the neighborhood's profile in 2013.
This year saw the opening of the new $185 million San Diego Central Library, a block east of Petco Park and the already vibrant Ballpark District. And the San Diego Chargers continued to eye an 11-acre site east of the ballpark for a desired new stadium, though financing and other logistics for the billion-dollar project are far from finalized.
