Abstract
The university libraries in brazil are living, at the same time, three evolutive phases in their development: a) the automation of basic library routines; b) the on-line access to database through satelite teleprocess; c) the era of Internet. Each of these phases is named after the period which generated the distinctive technological stages, so the first phase library is called electronic; the second virtual and the third digital. The analogy between evolution and concept of libraries and the technologies of information and communication are important to understand what is going on the UNESP university libraries web. In the present stage of development, it is concluded that there is a mistaking of the three phases, electronic, virtual and digital which needs to be studied concerning the digital information organization.
