Though it's enjoyed a steady stream of customers over its first month, Plato's Closet, a new Commack clothing store, hasn't made a single sale.
That's OK - Long Island's newest resale franchise is only open for buying right now, and those customers are helping to stock the place by selling their own gently used apparel and accessories.
Unlike consignment stores that take merchandise from the public and pay for it after it's resold, Plato's Closet pays cash on the spot for items in good condition that were featured in retail stores within the last 18 months.
Matthew Landsberg, 27, who along with his parents, Michael and Lorrie, is the first area franchisee for Plato's Closet, said local radio spots and word of mouth have kept him busy.
"The response has been great," Landsberg said. "There's been a constant flow of people."
Once the store reaches its corporate-approved level of inventory, it will be open to customers looking for slightly used jeans, tops, handbags and jewelry for teens and young adults at lower-than-new prices. Landsberg said the anticipated opening for selling is sometime in February.
Built in a 3,500-square-foot space at 6153 Jericho Turnpike, part of a former Lucille Roberts fitness center, Plato's Closet isn't Landsberg's first retail experience. The...
