Charles G. Derderian, a decorated veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard who was active in veterans' organizations, died Jan. 6 of a heart attack at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset. He was 89.
Derderian, of Manhasset, attended John Adams High School in Queens. In 1943, at 18, he enlisted in the Coast Guard and spent 20 months overseas, some of it while assigned to Landing Ship Tank 759. He received the Silver Life Saving Medal in 1997 for his actions in December 1944 in Waikiki, Hawaii, where he saved the lives of many sailors, according to his brother Robert Derderian of Manhasset.
