Patients in Kent are benefitting from access to faster state-of-the art scanning, higher quality images and improved results following the launch, last month, of a brand new, cutting edge MRI scanner at BMIThe Somerfield Hospital in Maidstone.
The new equipment, a GE Optima MR 450w, 1.5T wide bore MRI scanner, which weighs approximately the same as a double-decker bus, was lifted by crane into the hospital in December 2012 and is the only wide bore scanner in the area.
Unlike conventional MRI scanners, the wide bore scanner does not require the patient's whole body to be inside the machine. For most examinations, the patient's head will remain outside the scanner. If it is...
