If Suman Raghunathan, South Asian Americans Leading Together's new executive director, did not go into any of the professions that draw a big chunk of immigrant children, it was partly because of her parents.
"My parents had a very progressive vision," she said of her father B V Raghunathan, a retired engineer, and mother Lalitha, a retired genetic scientist, who brought her up to be aware of her position as an advantaged child, and the need for social justice for every one.
The only child of her parents, Suman Raghunathan is an alumna of Brown University and the Milano School of International Affairs, Management, and Urban Policy in New York City.
Raghunathan, an activist for over a decade who has worked for advocacy groups such as Progressive States Network as well as the New York Immigration Coalition, said that early on in her undergraduate days at Brown, she learned the importance of building coalitions with likeminded...
