Întreaga opera a lui Dimitrie Cantemir are un pronuntat spirit educativ care sporeste si se aprofundeaza tot mai mult pe masura Îndepartarii de vremurile În care a trait si a activat marele carturarenciclopedist: fie ca este "Divanul", "Istoria ieroglifica", "Descrierea Moldovei", "Hronicul" vechimii a româno-moldo-vlahilor" sau alte lucrari. Si În acest sens opera lui D.Cantemir continua, Însa la un nivel calitativ nou, mai esential, mai amplu dezvoltarea si aprofundarea conceptelor etico-morale elaborate În epocile istorice precedente. De fapt În devenirea umanismului românesc sunt remarcate doua coordonate fundamentale: 1) umanismul bizantin; 2) orientarea carturarilor români spre lumea latinitatii originale; În aria culturii românesti din secolul al XVI-lea, Miron Costin, latinistul va orienta cunostintele spre Roma si spre Tara Italiei, iar stolnicul Cantacuzino va face elogiul modelului grec de civilizatie. Dimitrie Cantemir va realiza sinteza.1
Anume despre aceasta sinteza sau cercetare În continuare a conceptelor filosofico-religioase În context istorico-filosofic (sau continuitate istorico-filosofica) vom relata În cele ce urmeaza. În special ne vom referi la anumite principii etico-morale crestine. Si daca Miron Costin afirma ca toate sunt trecatoare În lume ("Fum si umbre sÎntu toate, visuri si parere/ Ce nu petrece lumea si, n ce nu-i cadere"?) - apoi si Stolnicul Constantin Cantacuzino - constata ca ceia sÎntu În scara virtutii acea mai de sus, neputÎnd a sta Într'acele stepene, cad foarte la mare slabiciune".
Iar Dimitrie Cantemir remarca ca "Viata si norocul omului sunt ca fumul" - Si este adevarat ce zice Apostolul Ce este viata noastra? Abur. Dar pentru ca viata ne este scurta, iar norocul este necredincios fata de noi, ce trebuie sa facem? Ceea ce spune Domnul cÎnd zice: "Cel ce crede În mine nu va muri În veac".2
Lucrarea este destinata sa cultive adevarata Întelepciune si cumsecadenie omeneasca, conduita morala crestina si smerenie crestina, povatuind urmasii cum sa Înteleaga viata si existenta În lume si sa devina partasi spirituali ai existentei durabile "Divanul" este o adevarata Enciclopedie etico-moral-crestina.
La intersectie de milenii opera lui Dimitrie Cantemir, prin conceptia sa profunda si complexa asupra lumii, prin gândurile originale, generalizarile si ideile expuse amplu si argumentat - este mai actuala decÎt lucrarile multor contemporani de-ai nostri. Dupa o perioada istorica de cosmar spiritual, de ateism militant si ideologie comunista toti oamenii de buna credinta si, mai ales, tânara generatie Îsi exprima adeziunea afectiva si intelectuala pentru credinta si valorile general-umane; Iar opera lui D.Cantemir si În special lucrarile din tinerete (Divanul) sunt determinante În acest sens.
Divanul este prima lucrare filosofica (si foarte) valoroasa a lui Dimitrie Cantemir. Conform conceptiei autorului lucrarea este constituita din trei parti: prima parte cuprinde dialogul "Întelept-Lume"; partea a doua un comentariu privind pledoaria Înteleptului; partea a treia reflecta concilierea esentelor "Lume-Întelept", precum si victoria Înteleptului În Lume.
Important este faptul ca principiile moralei crestine reprezinta poruncile lui Dumnezeu care sunt obligatorii pentru crestini, În cazul cÎnd ei sunt orientati sa se desavÎrseasca din punct de vedere moral. În acest context viata pamÎnteasca este numai o etapa pregatitoare pentru viata vesnica.
De fapt ambele parti ale dialogului Întelept-Lume constituie conceptii diferite. Prima conceptie, cea a Înteleptului, reflecta orientarea traditionala specifica crestinismului ortodox, iar conceptia Lume - este de orientare laica. Si daca conceptia Înteleptului este de orientare crestinortodoxa Înseamna ca si normele morale care rezulta din pledoaria acestuia Îl pregatesc pe Om de viata vesnica. Si aceasta teza ar constitui poate esenta dialogului Întelept-lume. Principiile si normele morale propovaduite de Întelept, de fapt, constituie sau reprezinta o morala desavÎrsita deoarece sunt fundamentate pe autoritatea divina. Anume de aceea Binele pe care morala crestina Îl asteapta de la credinciosi este apreciat ca fiind expresia nemijlocita a vointei lui Dumnezeu si care se contine În legile morale. Iisus Hristos fiind Întruchiparea moralitatii desavÎrsite este cel mai viu exemplu pentru crestinii care au descoperit aceasta morala.
Concomitent Dimitrie Cantemir realizeaza o periodizare a vietii omenesti care o precede pe aceea a lui J.J. Rouseau: viata umana este divizata În 7 etape: pruncia, copilaria, tineretea, voinicia, barbatia, caruntetea si batrÎnetea.
Punctul de pornire sau temeiul privind necesitatea evidentierii valorii elementelor etico-morale din "Divanul" Îndeosebi cele de caracter religios (crestin) l-a constituit faptul incontestabil ca orice nou studiu evidentiaza noi nuante, noi aspecte, noi interpretari si valori care completeaza si Întregesc imaginea si valoarea acestuia.
Principalul rezida În faptul ca Dimitrie Cantemir a conceput epoca În care a activat ca o epoca umanista, exprimÎndu-si cugetarile În spiritul marelui umanist Erasmus din Rotterdam. D.Cantemir este convins ca umanismul genereaza lumina si perspective În dezvoltarea societatii, este calauza vrednica În viata oamenilor, fiind opus Întunericului si barbariei din epocile precedente.
Astfel Într-o ipostaza noua este conceputa continuitatea cognitiva si etico-morala. La fel ca si cronicarii D.Cantemir accentueaza ca la Începutul Tarii Moldovei a fost un cap de "buor
Herbul Tarii, vechii s-au ales buar,
Numele vestindu-si ca tunul prin nuar.
Noii mai pre urma, avÎndu-l mosie,
Tot acel vechiu nume mai vestindu-l stie".3
De aici stema Moldovei reprezinta un cap de buor (zimbru), adica un taur salbatic, puternic si dornic de liberate, si care simbolizeaza vigoarea, demnitatea si aspiratiile spre izbavire ale poporului. În asa mod stema Moldovei Întruchipeaza o generalizare a unor fenomene, circumstante si fapte social-istorice de o anumita ordine si semnificatie. Generalizarea În cauza, exprimÎnd si o imagine filosofica senzoriala anumita, constituie un semn de neliniste care Îndeamna, desteapta avÎnd În acelasi timp o mare forta social-istorica si educativa. În fata noastra se afla nu pur si simplu un cap de bour privit În existenta sa materiala, ci un model destinat sa formeze constiinta nationala, sa cultive patriotismul, sa genereze actiuni si transformari social-economice si spirituale profunde si de durata, sa afirme demnitatea noastra, ca neam.
În aspect comparativ evidentiem mai multe puncte de reper prin care Dimitrie Cantemir "continua" sa aprofundeze coordonata continuitatii umaniste În raport cu predecesorii sai, mai ales a moralistului secolului Miron Costin - caracterul trecator a tot ce exista În lume, si În special faptele omului.
"Ia aminte, dara. O oame, cine esti pe lume,
Ca o spuma plutitoare, ramÎÎ fara nume,
Una fapta, ce-ti ramÎne, buna, te lateste.
În ceriu cu fericie În veci te mareste"4
La rândul sau Dimitrie Cantemir accentueaza ca "Iata dar ca faptele bune prelungesc viata si Înnoiesc tineretea nu numai În veacul ce va sa vie si care este fara de sfÎrsit, ci si Într'acesta care are sfÎrsit, mai ales ca nu tu, ci cerul este patria noastra".5
Element educativ distinctiv este umanismul lui D.Cantemir care priveste omul ca o fiinta rationala, fiind perfect, desavârsit si creat sa "domneasca liber si sa comande celor de sus prin lumina intelectuala care i s-a dat". Mai apoi, pierzÎnd perfectiunea, omul a pierdut si lumea sau existenta cereasca.
Evidentiind omul ca o fiinta rationala si umanista D.Cantemir Îl priveste ca pe un purtator al fortei divine, avÎnd drept menire stapÎnirea lumii. Omul nu trebuie sa fie sclavul lumii deoarece esenta umana este Însufletita de forta ratiunii. Pentru marele nostru gânditor si carturar omul, constiinta lui fireasca, caracterul deplin al ratiunii sunt ceva foarte personal, iar steaua din interiorul capului meu este ratiunea mea. Si aceasta ratiune are menirea de a-l reorienta pe om În conduita sa morala, de a-l izbavi de raul social si moral din societate. În acest context sunt calauzitoare cuvintele Înteleptului de care trebuie sa tina cont oricine: "Dumnezeu a facut lumea spre binele, iar nu spre raul omului" - Însa, "dupa savârsirea pacatului lumea s-a schimbat În rau" - iar "pentru nimicirea Pacatului trebuie sa vina În lume Hristos, noul Adam" - pentru a pacatului dezlegare.6 Si astfel omul Îl va cunoaste pe Dumnezeu dupa lucrurile si faptele sale care, realizÎndu-le, se va Înalta În credinta si conduita sa morala.
Si numai cunoscÎndu-l pe Dumnezeu Omul va Întelege cu adevarat ca "Dumnezeu e o esenta spirituala si prea desavÎrsita, de aceea este vesnic si fara de Început; el este viata, unic, atotputernic, Într-atÎt, ÎncÎt orice vrea este În stare sa duca la bun sfÎrsit, atotstiutor pÎna acolo, Învat nimic din cele ce s-au facut sau se vor face, oricÎt ar fide ascunse, de la el nu se pot ascunde".7
În acelasi timp e necesar sa evidentiem esenta Raului În lume. Da, Raul exista. Dar Dumnezeu nu a creat raul. Si noi nu vom striga - traiasca raul numai de aceea ca el este antipodul Binelui. Dar exista doua coordonate majore > Pacatul si Pedapsa. Si daca ai pacatuit (adica daca ai facut un Rau) rasplata se asteapta> vei fipedepsit. Si daca Dumnezeu admite raul Înseamna ca noi trebuie sa Întelegem În profunzime esenta corelatiei Bine-Rau.
Pentru Dimitrie Cantemir "natura"- adica esenta Înseamna atât esenta umana, cât si esenta animala, iar omul trebuie sa se gândeasca În permanenta nu numai la esenta demnitatii sale, cÎt si la lipsa acestei demnitati. Carturarul evidentiaza acel tip de demnitate care Îl individualizeaza pe om printre celelalte fiinte pe pamÎnt si, În special, faptul ca el poseda spirit. Anume ratiunea Îi ajuta omului sa patrunda În tainele adevarului si sa aleaga bunele. D.Cantemir accentueaza Într-o maniera relevanta ca omul trebuie sa se gândeasca la nimicnicia sa, si, mai ales, la faptul referitor la distanta imensa dintre el si Dumnezeu, si nu numai În context dimensional spatial, ci si În esenta - ca atare.
Datoria omului este sa Înteleaga În profunzime marea Întelepciune ca "Lumea se mentine prin mila lui Dumnezeu". Neamul omenesc a trait si mai traieste Înca În desertaciune si În conditii nechibzuite, În circumstante instabile si dezechilibrate, si daca atÎta amar de vreme mai traieste, aceasta se datoreaza preabogatei Mile a lui Dumnezeu. Anume de aceea Dimitrie Cantemir considera ca În conceptia despre om momentul teologic apare si se manifesta În momentul În care omul ca esenta naturala este examinat ca "un atom trecator". Întreaga existenta umana necesita Întelegerea faptului determinant ca "În lume urmeaza desertaciunea" - Desertaciune a desertaciunilor, toate sunt desarte".8 Si printre aceste desertaciuni este si pofta desfrÎnarii. Si D.Cantemir evoca spusele filosofului grec Tales care afirma ca "Marea, focul si femeia sunt trei rele" care trebuie evitate de oricine.
Sau cât de actuale sunt ideile ca lumea a generat multe nebunii (de mÎncari si bauturi multe, goana dupa bogatie, lacomia) de care trebuie sa ne pazim Întotdeauna, deoarece "Pofta neÎnfrÎnata Împinge sufletul spre moarte".
Si Dimitrie Cantemir evidentiaza mai multe tipuri sau forme de manifestare a raului În lume: nu te amagi cu frumusetile lumii, lucrurile lumii sunt ca praful În bataia vÎntului, sa nu te Întristezi vazÎndu-i puternici pe Împaratii neamurilor, valoarea binelui si paguba raului, cel bogat În lume este bogat si orb, calea larga si lata duce la moarte, exemplul lui Alexandru cel Mare, nu te lacomi, nu fii invidios etc. Si omul este chemat sa nu stee ca un ostas trÎndav si neatent fata de o vadita primejdie, ci fereste-te, fii de-a pururi treaz, gândeste-te la toate, de peste tot, bine Înarmat si luÎnd seama Împotriva tuturor"9. Iata asemenea calitati sunt toate necesare omului contemporan.
Carturarul ne Îndeamna la virtuti, la savÎrsirea virtutilor si la evitarea, la depasirea rautatilor. Stiind ca moartea este inevitabila omul este orientat la fapte bune. Ce-i ramÎne omului dupa moarte - faptele savÎrsite, iar acestea si constituie numele bun al omului, numele pe care generatiile ulterioare sa-l rosteasca cu respect. Si numele bun este cel mai scump lucru din lume la care trebuie sa pretinda orice om; ÎntrucÎt faptele rele sunt o piedica pentru a obtine un adevarat nume.
Este accentuata teza ca omul este o particica a vesniciei numai prin faptele sale morale bune si care În esenta sunt de origine divina. De aici urmeaza si concluzia În spirit ecleziastic ca "tu sa cauti mai mult sa meditezi la lungimea vietii viitoare, care este nemarginita si nesfÎrsita, si sa nu lupti sa devii din batrÎn tÎnar, ci din pacatos drept, ca prin faptele tale sa ti se Înnoiasca sufletul, caci nici noi, nici viata noastra nu sântem din lumea aceasta, ci trairea noastra e În ceruri".
Dimitrie Cantemir demonstreaza ca idealul uman este acela al omului instruit, educat si virtuos. Si acest ideal educativ este obtinut prin: 1) cunoasterea de sine; 2) cunoasterea lui Dumnezeu; 3) cunoasterea lumii. De aici rezulta ca modul În care D.Cantemir concepe esenta lumii este de substanta rationala, si ca anume ratiunea este calauza faptelor umane. Iar recunoasterea rolului ratiunii În existenta umana reflecta În mod nemijlocit interpretari umaniste asupra existentei umane.
Astazi devin tot mai semnificative sau chiar profetice cuvintele Înteleptului care În spiritul filosofiei bizantine declara Întregii lumi ca "Însusurile exterioare superioare, precum si cele inferioare specifice mie sunt specifice si tie".
În convingerea deplina a lui D.Cantemir, Însusirea deplina a cunostintelor umaniste Îl ajuta pe om sa conceapa adevarata sa origine, care contribuie la maretia fiintei umane, la Înaltarea omului, la patrunderea În esenta corelatiei ratiune-credinta. Aceasta interpretare consolideaza conceptia morala, precum si cunostintele acumulate conform carora ratiunea si credinta fac ca omul sa devina chiar asemanator lui Dumnezeu.
Si aceasta asemanare necesita credinta adevarata Întrucât "trebuie sa credem cu certitudine, ca daca, potrivit poruncii lui Dumnezeu, savÎrsim virtutea si sfintenia, nu numai ca putem agonisi culmea fericirii prin harul si darul sau, dar si ca de nu tinem aceasta cale, nu putem cu nici un chip obtine aceasta fericire".10 Si drept calauza În realizarea acestui nobil scop sunt Dumnezeistele cuvinte: "Paziti sfintenia, fara de care nimeni nu va vedea pe Dumnezeu".
În asa mod, umanismul este axat pe constientizarea propriei identitati, pe instruire si educatie. Oamenii manifesta un interes mai sporit fata de propriul sau destin, Încep ca conceapa mai profund rostul vietii si rostul lumii În general. Si În "Divanul" omul se manifesta mai ÎntÎi de toate ca o fiinta rationala, accentuÎndu-se ca numai acela este om adevarat care este În stare sa se Înalte prin propria sa ratiune. Si anume ratiunea devine stea calauzitoare orientÎndu-l pe om sa conceapa si sa demonstreze virtuti care-l face sa fie fericit.
Da, omul doreste o viata fericita, Însa aceasta poate fiobtinuta numai În cazul cÎnd el practica o conduita morala adevarata, onesta, cinstita, respectuoasa fata de credinta si fata de semenii sai. De la acestea el ar putea culege pilde concrete de manifestare a virtutilor. Caci afirma D.Cantemir "ca este greu sa se gaseasca cineva la care sa fie Întrunite În chip desavÎrsit si deplin toate virtutile si bunatatile, tu, imitÎnd diferiti oameni Înzestrati cu tot felul de virtuti, osteneste-te ca pe toate sa le cuprinzi În tine".11
Iar daca omul este axat nemijlocit pe calea obtinerii adevaratei fericiri el trebuie sa conceapa ca o cale neteda spre ceruri nu exista, ca "suferintele si rabdarea necazurilor sunt pricina si materia virtutilor" - Si noi trebuie sa credem - Întrucât fara credinta nimeni nu poate fifericit - Si numai urmÎnd smerenia si renuntÎnd la trufie, la "parerea prea buna despre sine" - vei putea savÎrsi fapte vrednice.
În general Însa conceptele lui D.Cantemir În domeniul instruirii, a educatiei morale necesita afirmarea unei legi morale adecvate ce ar contribui la afirmarea unei conduite pentru un bine general (pentru toti) si care ar corespunde tuturor. Iar aceste cerinte prevad instruirea, obtinerea unor cunostinte generale fara de care omul nu poate rezista raului social si viciilor care-l pÎndesc la orice pas. Si doar Învatatura Îl poate salva pe om de vitregiile si furtunile (problemele) sociale. Si asta e o cerinta prioritara deoarece "Copilul neÎnvatat dobitoc mic creste, iar mare facÎndu-se, bou mare se numeste, caci pedeapsa (educatia) si Învatatura lipsind, nu numai În copilarie, dar si asa În batrÎnete tot dobitoc se va numi si asemenea celor fara socoteala (ratiune) se va socoti".12 Deci anume ignoranta este cauza raului social, a pacatelor si deci a faptelor rele. Înteleptul ne Îndeamna "Nu face loc pacatului cÎtusi de putin, caci pacatul, gasind cel mai mic prilej, poate face mari rautati"13
Carturarul este convins ca omul nu este un subiect pasiv si inert al istoriei, ci se manifesta ca un purtator concret al fortei divine. Iar instruirea va combate ignoranta, raul social, faptele negative, viciile si consecintele lor, scopul carora este de a denigra natura umana. Astfel e necesara cultivarea unor asemenea virtuti-calitati care sa se opuna cu adevarat factorilor si fenomenelor negative. Si orientarea dominanta ce rezulta din acest proces educational integral ar avea drept scop final - afirmarea adevaratului Bine, a acelui Bine spre care tinde Omul si pe care doreste sa-l obtina cu adevarat.
De aici si virtutea credintei care are drept scop cunoasterea a tot ce este supranatural. Iar manifestarea concreta a credintei sunt faptele concrete, Întrucât credinta fara fapte nu exista, este moarta. Important este ca credinciosul sa Înteleaga ca credinta vine În ajutorul ratiunii si Îmbogateste nu numai continutul, dar si calitatea cunostintelor referitor la cele supranaturale. Si numai credinta ne ajuta sa-l cunoastem cu adevarat pe Dumnezeu. De aceea legea morala considera credinta obligatorie pentru credinciosi. Iar În cel mai general sens credinta Îndeplineste un rol absolut necesar pentru mÎntuirea credinciosului - idei foarte actuale În zilele noastre.
Educarea unor virtuti, a aptitudinilor spre bine În general pot firealizate În cazul cÎnd sunt cunoscute cauzele care frÎneaza dezvoltarea morala a omului si respectiv afirmarea virtutilor. Anume de aceea Înteleptul din "Divanul" apara morala crestina, iar ratiunea si lumea se manifesta În contextul interactiunii specifice dintre corp si suflet, precum se manifesta omul irational si omul rational.
În general, dupa D.Cantemir credinta iar poruncile divine, În special, sunt superioare ratiunii, care desi apeleaza la argumente si logica, la fapte concrete si actiune, totusi e situata la un nivel mai inferior. AvÎnd misiunea de a guverna lumea În care exista si activeaza, omul este determinat sa se calauzeasca cu "Întreaga Întelepciune si cu buna socoteala". Iar Întelepciunea adevarata la care aspira crestinul este frica de Dumnezeu. Si În viata cotidiana deseori se spune: uite omul acesta nici de Dumnezeu nu are frica. Vai de capul lui! Astfel ratiunea este considerata ca fiind inferioara credintei si anume În virtutea acestui fapt ratiunea trebuie sa accepte sa fie sub "lumina credintei". Însa pornind de la teza ca omul este o fiinta rationala el savÎrseste fapte si lucruri care prin continutul lor reflecta un adevarat Bine social, care prezinta o temelie adecvata pentru Înaltarea demnitatii umane. În contextul acestor circumstante, omul trebuie sã se cãlãuzeascã de adevãrate valori umane, care devenind acþiuni practice ar contribui În mod esenþial la nesãvÎrsirea pãcatelor, si În consecinþã, la educaþia unui om cu cele mai nobile calitãþi morale.
În asa mod, Îndeplinind poruncile divine, omul realizeazã cu adevãrat rolul social al sãu În lume, si, În special, a tezei cã el (omul) este stãpÎnul lumii. ai aceasta are loc deoarece, "Nu rob, ce stãpÎn lumii Dumnãdzãu ti-au lãsat, pentru aceasta tu pe dinsa, iara nu ea pe tine sã stãpÎnescã".14 Dar, Însusi faptul cã D.Cantemir Îl situeazã pe om tot mai sus, proclamÎndu-l chiar stãpÎnul lumii, demonstreazã cã lumea a fost creatã pentru om. ai dacã omul va petrece bine viaþa sa, numai atunci el va Înþelege cã a trãit cu adevãrat. Însã În orice perioadã a vieþii sale, omul este dominat sã þinã În permanenþã cont de esenþa celor trei lucruri: "moartea, Învierea si dreapta judecatã". Deci, orice om ar spera la o dreaptã judecatã care este o consecinþã a faptelor sale, a virtuþilor crestinesti, a ÎnfrÎnãrii poftelor trupesti, þinÎnd minte cã "poftele trupesti adicã pãcatele scurteazã viaþa".
În general Însã, omul lui Dimitrie Cantemir nu se naste numai bun sau numai rãu. Calitãþile morale negative ale omului sau rãul moral din el se aflã În legãturã nemijlocitã cu condiþiile vieþii social-economice reale, cu vremurile complicate si vitrege. Desi acceptã ideea pãcatului strãmosesc, si, respectiv, a stãrii umilitoare prin care a trecut omul de-a lungul secolelor, totusi Dimitrie Cantemir crede În aptitudinile creatoare ale omului, În indulgenþa si În spiritul lui crestin - idei actuale si foarte necesare pentru tÎnãra generaþie.

ELEMENTS OF ETHICS IN THE WORK 'THE DIVAN'

Abstract: In this article some Christian ethical and moral aspects from the work the 'Divan' by Dimitrie Cantemir are examined: the essence of the dialogue of 'The Wise- The World, "The World-The Wise", the victory of the Wise in the World as well as the correlation Faith-Reason, Sin-Penance, "the emptiness", Christian dignity, Christian pity, Divine authority, Holiness, Christian virtues, Wisdom, Good-Evil, Education, etc."

The whole work of Dimitrie Cantemir has a well-marked educational spirit that increases and deepens more on the extent of the removal from the times when the great scholar and encyclopaedist lived and activated: either it is The Divan, The Hieroglyphic History, The Description of Moldavia, The Chronicle of the Durability of the Romanians-Moldavians- Wallachians or other works. In this regard as well, the work of D. Cantemir continues, but on a newly qualitative level, more essential, more ample the development and deepening of the ethical and moral concepts elaborated in the previous historical epochs. In fact, in the establishment of the Romanian Humanism two fundamental coordinates can be noticed: 1) the Byzantine Humanism; 2) the orientation of the Romanian scholars towards the world of the original Latinity; in the area of the Romanian culture of the 16th century, Miron Costin, the Latinist will direct the knowledge towards Rome and Italy and Cantacuzino will make the eulogy to the Greek model of civilization. Dimitrie Cantemir will realize the synthesis.1
It is namely about this synthesis or research in continuation of the philosophical-religious concepts in historical-philosophical context (or historical-philosophical continuity) that we will relate as follows. We will refer particularly to some Christian ethic-moral principles. And if Miron Costin affirms that all is fleeting in this world ("Everything is just fume and shades, dreams and opinions/ What is there that it is not lost and fallen away"?), then Constantin Cantacuzino realizes that the ones who are on the highest scale of virtues, being unable to stay in those ranks, easily fall in a very weak moment".
And Dimitrie Cantemir remarks that "Man's life and luck are like smoke/fume"; and it is true what the Apostle says while asking: What is our life? Fume. But since life is short, and the luck is unfaithful towards us, what should we do? To do what Lord suggests while saying: "The one who believes in Me will never die".2
The work is intended to cultivate true human wisdom and human kindness, moral Christian behavior, and Christian obedience, counseling the followers on how to understand life and existence in the world and to become spiritual adepts of the lasting existence; the work The Divan being thus a real ethic-moral Christian encyclopedia.
At the border of millenniums the work of Dimitrie Cantemir, through its profound and complex conception on world, through the original ideas, the generalizations and the ideas exposed largely and with sound arguments - is more up-to-date than the works of many contemporaries of our times. After a historical period of spiritual nightmare, of militant atheism and communist ideology all people of good belief, and mostly the young generation expresses its affective and intellectual adhesion for faith and the general-human values; and the creation of D.Cantemir and especially the works from youth (The Divan) are representative in this regard.
The Divan is the first philosophical and (very) valuable work of Dimitrie Cantemir. According to the author's conception, the work consists of 3 parts: the first part includes the dialogue "The Wise-The World"; the second > a commentary regarding the pleading of the Wise; the third part reflects the conciliation of the essences "The World-The Wise", as well as the victory of the Wise in the World.
It is important that the principles of the Christian moral represent the commandments of God that are compulsory for Christians, should they be oriented to improve morally. In this regard, the earthly life is just a preparatory stage for the eternal life.
In fact, the both parts of the dialogue "The Wise-The World" constitute different conceptions. The 1st conception that of the Wise reflects the traditional orientation specific to the Orthodox Christianity, and the World - the conception is of lay orientation. And if the conception of the Wise is of Christian-Orthodox orientation, it means also that the moral norms which result from his pleading get ready the Man for the eternal life. This thesis would probably constitute the essence of the dialogue "The Wise-The World". The principles and the moral norms preached by the Wise, in fact, constitute or represent a perfect moral since they are based on divine authority. That is why the Good expected by the Christian moral from the faithful is appreciated as being the direct expression of God's will and which is contained in the moral laws. Jesus Christ being the embodiment of the consummate morality is the most vivid example for the Christians who found out this moral.
Concurrently, Dimitrie Cantemir realizes a periodization of human's life that precedes the one of J. J. Rouseau: human's life is divided in 7 steps: babyhood, childhood, youth, courage hood, bravery hood, grey-hood and old age.
The starting point or the reason regarding the necessity of emphasizing the value of the ethicmoral elements from the work "Divanul" and especially the religious (Christian) ones was the indisputable fact that each new study stresses new sides, new aspects, new interpretations and values that complete and unite its image and value.
The most important is the fact that Dimitrie Cantemir devised the epoch when he served as a humanist epoch, expressing his thoughts in the spirit of the great humanist Erasmus of Rotterdam. D. Cantemir is convinced that the humanism generates light and perspectives in the society development; it is the true guide in the people's life, being opposed to the dark and barbarism from the previous epochs.
Thus, in a new hypostases it is made the concept of the cognitive and ethic-moral continuity. In the same way, like the chroniclers, D. Cantemir emphasizes that at the beginning of Molodva Country there was a head of "buffalo",
"As Flag of State, the old ones have chosen the buffalo,
Making famous the name as the tower in the cloud
...Still the same old name more famous is known".3
From here, Moldova's flag represents a head bull, a wild ox, strong and wishful of freedom which symbolizes vigor, dignity and aspirations towards the liberating of the people. In such a way, the flag of Moldova incorporates a generalization of some phenomena, circumstances and socio-historical facts of a certain order and significance. This generalization, expressing also certain philosophical sensorial image, constitutes a sign of trouble that guides, wakens having in the same time a big socio-historical and didactic force. There is not simply a head of bull regarded in its materialistic existence, but also a model meant to form the national consciousness, to cultivate the patriotism, to generate socioeconomic actions and profound modifications and lasting ones, to assert our dignity as nation.
In a comparative plan, we emphasize more starting points through which Dimitire Cantemir "continues" to deepen the coordinate of the humanist continuity reporting it to his predecessors, especially of the epoch's moralist Miron Costin - the transient character of all that is in the world and especially the man's deeds.
"Take care, so then. O man, you, who are in the world,
As sailing foam, you remain without a name"
The only thing is your deed that remains,
And in sky happily worships you forever"4
In his turn, Dimitrie Cantemir stresses that "So, it is the good deeds that prolong our life and renew the youth not just in the following epoch and which is without end, but in the one that has an end, as more than this, it is not you, but the sky that is our native land".5
The humanism of D. Cantemir is a distinctive educative element, which regards the man as a rational creature, being perfect, absolute and created in order to "rule freely and to order to those from above through the intellectual life that he is given". Thereafter, losing his perfection, he lost also the world and the sky existence.
Identifying the man as a rational and humanist being, D. Cantemir regards him as a bearer of divine force, with the purpose of dominion of the world. The man must not be enslaved by the world, because human essence is enlivened by the force of reason. For our great thinker and scholar, the man - his natural conscience, completeness of reason - is something very personal, and "the star inside my head is my reason". This intelligence aims to redirect the man in his moral conduct, to save him from the social and moral evil in society. In this context, the Wise Man's words are guiding and must be taken into account by everyone: "God made the world for the human benefit and not for human evil" - but, "after committing the sin, the world has changed for the worse," - and "Christ, the new Adam, must come into the world to destruct the Sin" - to unravel the sin.6 And so, the man will know God by his things and actions, doing which he will ascend in faith and moral conduct.
And only knowing God, the Man will truly understand that "God is a spiritual and too perfect essence, so he is eternal and without beginning; he is life, unique, omnipotent, so that he is able to complete all he wants, omniscient, I learn nothing from the things that have been or will be made, no matter how they would be hidden, they cannot hide from him".7
At the same time, it is necessary to highlight the essence of Evil in the world. Yes, the Evil exists. But God did not create evil. And we will not shout - let the evil live - just because it is the antipode of the Good. There are two major coordinates: Sin and Penance. And if you have sinned (i.e. if you have made Evil), the reward expects you: you will be punished. And if God allows evil, it means that we must understand the essence of Good- Evil correlation in depth.
The "nature"- that is the essence- means both human and animal essence to Dimitrie Cantemir, and the man must constantly think about not only the essence of his dignity, but also about its absence. The scholar emphasizes that type of dignity that individualizes the man among other beings on the Earth, and, in particular, the fact that he possesses spirit. It is namely the reasoning that helps man penetrate into the mysteries of truth and choose the good. D. Cantemir emphasizes in a relevant manner that man has to think about his nothingness, and above all, about the immense distance between him and God, and not only in a dimensional spatial context, but in essence as such.
The man's duty is to understand in depth the great wisdom that "The world is maintained by the mercy of God". The human race has lived and still lives in emptiness and foolish conditions, in unstable and unbalanced circumstances, and if it still lives for such a long time, this is due to God's great mercy. That is why D.Cantemir believes that, the theological aspect appears in the concept about man and manifests itself at the moment when the man is considered "an evanescent atom" in his natural essence. The entire human existence requires the realization of the decisive fact that "The world follows the futility"- Vanity of vanities, all is in vain".8 The lust is also among these vanities. And D. Cantemir evokes the statement of the Greek philosopher Tales, who stated that "The sea, the fire and the woman are three evils" that should be avoided by everyone.
Yet how up-to-date are the ideas that the world has generated much madness (excessive food and drinks, chase after wealth, greed) of which we must always be aware, as "The intemperate desire pushes the soul to death".
Dimitrie Cantemir highlights several types or forms of manifestation of evil in the world: do not be deceived by the beauties of the world; the things of the world are like dust in the wind; do not get upset seeing the power of the kings of the nations, the value of the good and the prejudice of the evil; the rich in the world is rich and blind; the wide and broad path leads to death; the example of Alexander the Great; don't get envious, greedy etc. And the man is called not to "stay like a lazy soldier, who is not attentive to an obvious danger, but to watch out, be forever awake, think of everything and everywhere, stay well armed and defensive".9 All these qualities are necessary to the contemporary man.
The scholar urges us to commit virtues and avoid, overcome evil. Knowing that death is inevitable, the man is focused on good deeds. What remains after man's death are the committed acts and they represent the good name of the man, the name uttered with respect by subsequent generations. And a good name is the most valuable thing in the world any man should strive to; the misdeeds are an obstacle to get a real name.
The scholar emphasizes the thesis that the man is a part of eternity only by his good moral deeds and which essentially are of divine origin. Hence the conclusion in an ecclesiastical spirit that "you should strive to meditate on the future life length, which is unbound and timeless, and do not fight to become young from old, but righteous from sinner, as your soul should be renewed by your deeds, because neither we nor our lives are of this world, but our existence is in heaven".
Dimitrie Cantemir demonstrates that the human ideal is that of a trained, educated and virtuous man. And this educative ideal is achieved through: 1) self-knowledge; 2) knowledge of God; 3) knowledge of the world. Hence the way D. Cantemir conceives the essence of the world is of rational substance, and namely the reasoning is the guidance of human deeds. The recognition of the role of the reason in human existence reflects directly humanistic interpretations of human existence.
Generally, according to D.Cantemir the faith and especially the divine commandments are superior to reason that, even if it appeals to arguments and logics, to clear deeds and actions, is anyway situated at an inferior level.
Having the mission to govern the world in which he exists and activates, the man is determined to be guided with "the whole wisdom and good calculation". And the true wisdom to which the Christian is aspiring is the fear of God. And in daily life it is often said: "look, this man is not afraid even of God. Poor man!". Thus, the reason is considered as being inferior to faith and it is namely in this regard the ration should accept to be under "the light of faith". But considering the thesis that the man is a reasonable being, he commits acts and deeds which through their content reflect a real social Good, that presents an adequate basis for the heightening of the human dignity. In the regard of these circumstances, the man should be guided by the real human values, which becoming practical actions would contribute essentially to the non-committing of the sins, and as a result, to the education of a man with most noble moral qualities.
In such a way, realizing the divine commandments, the man truly accomplishes his social role in the world, and especially, of the thesis that he (the man) is the master of the world. And this takes place because "Not as a slave, but as master of the world God leftyou here, and for that, it is you to govern it".10
But generally, man in D. Cantemir's vision is not born just good or bad. The moral negative qualities of the man or his moral evil from himself is in direct connection with the conditions of the real soci0-economic life, with complicated and harsh times. Even if he accepts the idea of the ancestral sin, and accordingly, of the humiliating state through which the man passed throughout centuries, anyway, D. Cantemit believes in the creative capacities of the man, in his indulgency and Christian spirit - upto- date ideas and extremely necessary for the young generation.
