CONFUSIONES CONTEMPORÁNEAS SOBRE GEOGRAFÍA ANTIGUA. A PROPÓSITO DEL SINUS TARTESII Y DEL LACUS LIGUSTINUS

Resumen: En los intentos de reconstrucción de los paisajes antiguos de la Tartéside ha habido un abuso reiterado de la utilización de los términos latinos sinus Tartesii y lacus Ligustinus, ambos mencionados en la Ora maritima de Avieno, identificándolos en ocasiones con la misma realidad geográfica, y en otras no. Proponemos la identificación geográfica del sinus Tartesii con el actual golfo de Cádiz y la del lacus Ligustinus con la antigua ensenada marítima, hoy colmatada por las marismas y cruzada por el curso del río Guadalquivir. No obstante, conviene tener en cuenta que el Ligustinus de Avieno constituye una traslación, de las muchas de la geografía antigua, a la península ibérica de topónimos e hidrónimos de otras latitudes, en este caso del golfo de León. No es, por tanto, el nombre que griegos o latinos dieron al lugar, de ahí que constituya un hapax.

Abstract: In the attempts to reconstruct the ancient Tartessian landscapes there has been a reiterated abuse in the use of the Latin terms sinus Tartesii and lacus Ligustinus, both mentioned in Avienus' Ora Maritima, that have at times been identified with the same geographic reality, and at other times not. We propose the geographic identification of the sinus Tartesii with the present-day gulf of Cadiz and that of the lacus Ligustinus with the ancient maritime bay, now-a-day silted up by the marshlands and crossed by the Guadalquivir River. However, it must be noted that Avienus' Ligustinus constitutes a further case of the application in the Iberian Peninsula of toponyms and hydronyms borrowed from other latitudes, in this case from the gulf of León. It is therefore not the original place name, and thus constitutes a hapax.

1. INTRODUCCIÓN

La pretensión de reconocer en los paisajes actuales los lugares narrados en los escritos de la Antigüedad clásica es tan previsible como antigua. Los motivos que han llevado a estas identificaciones son tantos como propuestas han habido, desde el interés puramente erudito o científico en la reconstrucción del pasado hasta la tergiversación y apropiación de topónimos antiguos con fines apologéticos de estirpes nobiliarias, ciudades y naciones.
