I have already reviewed several volumes in the Springer series Encyclopedia of Earth Sciences. It may be just an accident of the selection of volumes I have been sent, but I get the impression that they are getting more practically orientated. An encylopedia of natural hazards has to be of interest, at some level, to everyone. We could have had a volume of volcanology and seismology or on extreme weather events, but we have one on hazards. The cover has in its design what looks like a bookseller's sticker saying "Includes case studies". So the first thing to say about this book is that is full of practical information, and that it goes wider than just the description and explanation of various earth science events.
