Jews are being murdered and beaten on the streets of Europe. Can it happen here?
Just hours after the murder of four people at the Jewish Museum in Brussels, Belgium, thugs outside Paris severely beat two kippot-wearing Jewish brothers with brass knuckles. The brothers remain badly hurt. In the Brussels case, police arrested Mehdi Nemmouche, a man they are calling "a jihadist." Just in May, a mother and daughter of Arab descent assaulted a young Jewish woman at a laundry outside Lyon, France; the mother held the girl down while the daughter hit her in the face, screaming "dirty Jew."
In France, Jews are being increasingly set upon by Muslims, while polls show that more and more French Jews are concluding that Muslim immigration will mean the end of Jewish life in that country.
A recent Anti-Defamation League (ADL) survey found that for every Jew on the planet there are 700 anti-Semites, defined as people who hold stereotypically negative opinions of Jews. The Jews of Europe could not have been surprised that the ADL found the most anti-Semitic societies are those in the Middle East. Judeophobic Muslim immigrants in Europe are driving the Jews out.
For quite a while, French Jews were in denial. It is human nature to ignore, minimize or deny facts whose consequences are unpleasant, and so at the time when attacks on Jews were just beginning, and something effective might have been done in response, people preferred to hope rather than to act, wishing that the phenomenon would dissipate - but like an infection whose early signs are ignored, it only grew worse.
