People who work downtown put up with a lot in exchange for the pleasure of eating outdoors. But while traffic and noise never are completely avoidable, some alfresco experiences are more idyllic than others. Here are two of the best--one brand new and one that never gets old.
-- ELLE ON THE RIVER
330 N. Wabash Ave.
312-923-7705
Just launched in May, this 108-seat cafe is a casual offshoot of the Langham hotel's Travelle, whose chef, Tim Graham, and pastry chef, Scott Green, are behind the food here.
Elle's terrace overlooks the Chicago River between State Street and Wabash Avenue, outside the AMA Plaza building, a prime location. There's no interior except for the kitchen (restrooms are on the hotel's second floor); weather permitting, it's open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.
The city makes an alluring backdrop....
