Abstract

Corin Tellado, in Spain, and Hedwig Courths-Mahler, in Germany, are the most successful female authors of their countries. Within completely different historical, social, and cultural contexts, they assumed and developed the popular form of the romance novel. In a first approach, the researchers will ask for the space they and their oeuvre have occupied in the past and still occupy in the present. A second approach shall lead them to the -- counterfactual -- promises that the two authors offer to their readers by means of the romantic novel genre.
