Abstract

Teaching multiculturalism and diversity to preservice teachers is an area that is critical in teacher education. In our continuing diversity population in the K-12 setting, teachers need to be prepared to teach those to high standards. But, how does one actually teach diversity and multiculturalism? This is an action research study conducted with seventeen preservice teacher educators in a Human Relations and Multiculturalism course that all education students are required to take in their education program. The class was taught using methods of inquiry, teaching towards transformation and higher levels of multiculturalism. Using teacher journal, model lessons, and narratives from the participants, the paper explored powerful ways in which preservice students learn about multiculturalism and how it applies to their lives and future profession.
