Ketoconazole (oral) discontinued because of liver injury risk

Janssen-Cilag (New Zealand) has advised healthcare professionals and consumers that oral ketoconazole [Nizoral] 200mg was discontinued on 1 December 2013. The company stopped supplying oral ketoconazole 200mg tablets as of this date. The action was taken because of ongoing safety concerns regarding liver injury in association with the agent. Patients requiring long-term antifungal treatment need to be switched to an alternative agent. Topical ketoconazole products are not affected by these safety concerns and will continue to be available.
