This volume of 12 contemporary works for solo flute, collected and edited by Italian composers Marco Reghezza and Giovanni Scapecchi, aims to introduce students to new music in a range of contemporary styles and languages that give musical and technical challenges without being impossibly difficult. This they have achieved; the pieces are ideal for advanced students venturing into the world of new music and are without exception well constructed and interesting.
Alywnne Pritchard's "Notwithstanding" seems fierce at first glance, with its five pages of demisemiquavers, but the effect is textural and offers excellent practice for evenness, quiet dynamics, and a smooth sound. The piece develops from tremolo-style repeated notes to a scalic motif that builds into the top register before becoming fully chromatic at the end of the piece.
"The Early Bird" by Carman Moore is a simpler and shorter work that stays out of the high register and could be handled by less advanced players. The piece requires a sense of character, so is an excellent choice for developing expression in a more modern context or as a sight-reading test for more advanced players (the Quick Study test...
