The Poultry Meat Processing industry has managed to avoid the ravages of the recession over the past five years. Despite depressed income conditions, chicken consumption rocketed during the past 20 years as the versatility and relatively low price of chicken tempted customers away from beef and lamb. The horsemeat scandal, implicating only red meat products, has provided a late boost to demand as some consumers have traded red meat for chicken. Processors have supported growth and enabled themselves to compete for the largest contracts by vertically and horizontally integrating. This consolidation has mapped closely with the expansion of supermarkets and restaurant chains as larger contracts demand greater supply capacity...As chicken consumption grew, the number and geographic spread of poultry meat processors changed dramatically. The industry has become very concentrated following a string of mergers and acquisitions. Keeping this growth in mind, business centres, such as London, are unable to facilitate the industry's requirements. As a result, industry operators are highly unlikely to locate themselves in these types of areas, evidenced by the low establishment numbers in those regions. In order to limit transport from poultry farms to processing facilities, the farming and industrial regions are the strategic locations for industry establishments.
