Manufacturing isn't a field I ever thought I'd be working in as a child, a teen or even as a young college graduate. I went to journalism school and worked as a crime reporter, a court reporter, a political reporter, a medical reporter and then, eventually, as an automotive reporter. It was in that final capacity that I was first exposed to a factory, to manufacturing.
The first factory I ever set foot in was General Motors' Detroit-Hamtramck factory, where a variety of big Cadillac cars were built over the years. I couldn't believe how clean, bright and sophisticated it was. And big, too. So many interconnected systems...
