Abstract

Numerous studies have been made of the Mexican Indian, his life, his culture, his character, his psychology, his customs, his problems, etc., but few deal with the influence that his vocabulary has exerted on Mexican literature. It is a field that is still almost unexplored and, therefore, rich, awakening curiosity and the desire to explore it.

A study on the penetration of indigenous voices in all the cultured languages of the world today would be something of inestimable value and would perhaps fill several volumes. In order to do justice to a study like this, it is, of course, necessary to limit it to a certain aspect of the total picture. The aspect chosen in this work is the extent to which indigenous voices have penetrated contemporary Mexican novels. Or, in other words, we can say that the purpose of this paper is to probe the extent of the penetration of indigenous voices in Mexican novel literature in our century.
