Story theatre is the name given to a style of presentation in which the actors describe the setting, narrate the story and go in and out of character as the situation requires.
I first saw this in the sixties in British Columbia, with the performances done from a horse-drawn gypsy caravan with the side let down to form a simple stage. The caravan travelled from park to park, and when it arrived the actors set up the stage and rang a handbell. The children, drawn by curiosity, would gather around to listen and see the story or fable come to life.
The idea originated from Paul Sills using fairy tales and improvisational theater techniques he adapted from his mother's (Viola Spolin) books and teachings.
