PRIMARY
Everyone, at some point in life, experiences grief. Many young children experience grief in ways small and large: from the loss of a goldfish or family pet, to the death of a grandparent, sibling or parent.
Share the Art Print with your class and explain that this type of artwork is called a "memorial." Ask students if the word reminds them of any others words (memory). Share with students that the two sculptures depict the artist and her husband grieving, or feeling deeply sad, over the death of their son. Ask students how the artist shows their sadness (facial expressions, body positions).
Give students time to draw a picture of a time in their life when they were sad. After a period of sketching, give students clay to form a figure or portrait head that has a sad expression. Give students time to present their work to the class and explain how the piece is attached to a personal memory.
