The computers and peripherals category is set to record slower retail volume growth in 2014 than 2013. A shift in consumer preference across computers and peripherals, such as from desktops to laptops and netbooks to tablets, impeded the overall retail volume growth of computers and peripherals in 2014. Consumers' hectic lifestyles also increasingly saw demand shift to portable computers that are compact, convenient for on-the-go usage and easy to connect to the internet.Computers and peripherals in Thailand posted an outstanding performance in both volume and retail current value terms in 2013, thanks to the aggressive movement of tablets and other portable computers. Retail volume sales of desktops and netbooks continued to see a negative performance, whereas laptops maintained its positive trend. Tablets saw aggressive competition between international and domestic brands. Thai consumers responded very well to the launch of new gadgets, particularly in tablets. Consumers who used to have a laptop or netbook for playing games, surfing the internet and checking email seemed to be looking for tablets as a replacement. Tablets are lighter, more convenient to carry and easily connect to Wi-Fi or the internet anywhere.Acer Computer remained the leading player in computers and peripherals in 2012. Acer holds strong ground in desktops, laptops and netbooks, whilst in tablets the company is not one of the main players; however, it is also focusing on capturing more share in this rising category. Acer has wide distribution, which means that its products are not only sold via electronics and appliance specialist retailers, but also via hypermarkets and department stores. Furthermore, products by Acer are affordable, and can usually capture the interest of university students and young working adults.Over the forecast period demand for tablets is likely to strongly replace demand for laptops, because the existing key demand for tablets is moving towards cheaper models for entertainment purposes, surfing the internet, games and reading books or magazines. On the other hand, laptops are important for personal work purposes. Beyond 2013, tablets and other portable computers is expected to continue to dominate growth, whilst demand for desktops and netbooks will gradually fade, and laptops is even expected to see a volume decline at the end of the forecast period. For more information on the "Computers and Peripherals in Thailand" market analysis, see the latest research: Computers and Peripherals in ThailandFollow us on Twitter @CandMResearch
