Abstract

In this study, the relation between students' learning styles and their achievement was examined according to two different instruction methods. The experimental design of the study was semi-experimental design with pre-test post-test non-equivalent control group. The sample of the study consisted of 124 2nd grade high school students in 2007-2008 academic year. In the study, Kolb Learning Style Inventory (KLSI) was used in order to determine students' learning styles and Work, Power and Energy Achievement Test (WPEAT) was used as pre-test and post-test to determine their achievement scores. The experimental group was taught with the 4MAT instruction method, which grounds on learning styles and takes into account the characteristics of the right and left hemispheres of the brain. On the other side, the control group was taught with the expository method. In the light of the obtained data, it was found that there was no difference between students' learning styles and achievement in terms of their pre-test scores. According to the post-test scores, a significant difference was found for the experimental group analytic learners. No difference was detected between achievement and learning styles for other learning styles.
