Abstract
The purpose of this study was to assess whether or not recipes found on popular food blogs are nutritionally balanced based on a nutrient analysis. Two supper entrees were chosen from each of the 25 most popular food blogs. A total of 50 supper entrée recipes were categorized by protein type and analyzed for their total calories, saturated fat, and sodium using Food Processor version 10.8.0. These values were compared with the respective recommended Daily Values for one meal. This study found that the average sodium and saturated fat contents were above one third of the current nutrition recommendations, but the average calories did not exceed recommendations. The recipes were also analyzed and compared to each other by protein category. The red meat category had the highest average calorie and saturated fat contents and the seafood category had the highest sodium content. It is important for health professionals to be aware of the nutritional value of these recipes, so they can better assist the public. With this information, dietitians are better equipped to help clients and the general public chose recipes to cook at home and make appropriate modifications to recipes.
