Water is considered a strategic resource in pursuit of a sustainable mining. There is a duality of the relation water-mine among the people involved in the mining: Water in is highly needed in several activities of this industry, but is the source of many concerns. Given the importance of water use in the mineral sector, this study aims to identify the main features of the international scientific production related to this subject in the last ten years. It was developed a bibliometric study, through the database Web of Science, listing the terms "water" and "Mining", in the period between 2003 and 2012. It was identified the most relevant studies on this topic, listing the ten most cited studies over this period. A total of 9.957 publications, being 75% of these scientific papers was found. The authors emphasize the relevance of sustainability issues in studies involving water and mining. It is evident that the main topics of the studies aim to contribute to a more efficient and sustainable mineral activity.
