The Boise law firm Hawley Troxell is merging with a four-attorney Idaho Falls firm Smith & Banks PLLC on August 1.
The firm also expanded the week of July 20 with the addition of Boise attorneys David W. Knotts, Carsten A. Peterson, Tracy L. Wright, William K. Fletcher and Jessica E. Pollack. That group's senior attorney, Dave Knotts, joins Hawley Troxell as a partner.
Law firm mergers are a big trend around the country, according to the national law firm management consulting firm Altman Weil. Altman Weil keeps track of mergers large and small. The number of firm mergers was 88 in 2013, the highest number since the firm has been compiling data. The number dropped 7 percent in 2014. Most involved firms with fewer than 20 lawyers.
