MY STREET FOOD KITCHEN Jennifer Joyce (Murdoch Books, $39.99) There are more than 150 illustrated recipes in this well-presented compendium of food from international markets and street stalls. Inclusions range beyond the expected Southeast Asian quick-and-easy fare and India's samosas and pakoras to "new American food", which covers the likes of Chicago's Garbage Salad. Happily this is not a dumpster delicacy but "a supersized chopped antipasto salad" that includes pickled peppers and loads of salami. There are easy-to-follow instructions for cooking such dishes as Japanese udon noodles and tonkatsu pork. In the Mediterranean, Jennifer Joyce introduces summery tidbits, gorgeous-looking meringues and decadent ice-creams, crisp artichoke fritters with lemon saffron aioli, and Napoli-style pizza with its "famous bubbly crust". Tip: a sprinkling of polenta or semolina on your baking tray "adds another layer of texture" to the crust. From the Middle East, who could resist filo pastry triangles filled with pumpkin and feta and served with mint dipping sauce, or fried eggplant sticks with sumac and honey? Also featured is a section on the author's 13 Tricks of the Trade to produce show-off meals -- you will require mandolin and julienne "tools" and the absolute necessity of a "decent-sized" wok. US-born Joyce lives in Britain and this is her 10th book; she cut her teeth, as it were, as a caterer and a cook at a cafe in Notting Hill, London. Now a food writer and stylist, she appears to be a keen traveller who is "thrilled" by the complexity of street food.
