PPL Electric Utilities Corp. could partner with other utilities along the path of its Project Compass transmission line running across most of Pennsylvania and into southern New York, PPL Corp. Chairman, President and CEO William Spence said Oct. 29.
Responding to a question during PPL's third-quarter 2015 earnings call, Spence said there is an ability to continue to segment the line and partner with utilities with service territories along the project route.
PPL is seeking approval for the first segment of the line, which will stretch 95 miles from Blakely, Pa., to Ramapo, N.Y., and will cost between $500 million and $600 million. The proposed 345-kV link between the PJM Interconnection LLC and New York ISO regions is intended to boost reliability.
The full Project Compass project would run 475 miles from western Pennsylvania to southeastern New York and is projected to cost between $3 billion and $4 billion.
PPL filed an interconnection application with the NYISO on Oct. 27 and said it expects the transmission line to be in service by 2023. Additional approvals for the project are needed from...
